Required Documents:

All bills for payment consideration must be in the Veteran's name. (In the case of a

deceased Veteran, the Veterans Service Commission will allow for the bills to be in

the applicant's name.) Bills such as phone (unless required by a Doctor’s order),

cable/satellite, home equity loans, or credit cards shall not be considered for payment;

however, these items may be considered in monthly expenses versus monthly income

up to certain amounts.

All sources of income to the applicant shall be considered and MUST BE PRESENTED

in deciding the question of granting or denying the assistance, and in determining the

amount of assistance that can be granted.

The following documents must be presented when requesting financial assistance:

  • DD214 (if not already on file) and proof of residency for 90+ days in Holmes County

  • Past 30 days Bank Statement that reflects CURRENT balance

  • 30 days' pay stubs, wages, interest, IRAs, or all other income sources including:

    • Veterans Affairs benefits​

    • Social Security or SSI

    • Rent income

    • Spousal or child support

    • other assistance agency support

    • Unemployment, worker's compensation, sick leave pay, etc.

    • ALL other income sources

  • All bills to be considered for payment or for deduction from overall monthly income

  • Medical expenses will be deducted dollar for dollar SPENT, not OWED

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be have been a resident of Holmes County for a period of no less than three months.

  • Applicants must be a Veteran, Veteran’s widow/widower, Veteran’s dependent children under the age of 18, or 23 if still attending school (if both Veteran and spouse are deceased).  For purposes of financial assistance, a Veteran is defined as an individual who was on Active Duty for a minimum of 90 days outside of training. National Guard and Reservists must have been activated on Title 10 orders for at least 90 days. Additionally, the Veteran's Discharge Characterization must be Honorable or Under Honorable Conditions.  

  • Each person requesting financial assistance must complete the standard application and provide all documentation requested.

  • No applicant will be approved for assistance more than four (4) times in a twelve (12) month period, with at least 30 days between assistance requests.

  • Grocery assistance may be provided six (6) times in a twelve (12) month period; however, the same application procedure applies and financial need must be established as in all cases.

  • Financial Assistance is not an automatic benefit or entitlement.
